Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
