Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
