No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
