Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using such treatments must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
