Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show draws close, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
